Core Curriculum

Literacy/Language Arts

The English Department at Poston Butte High School aims to strengthen students’ ability to read analytically, write academically, and think critically. Through varied genres, mediums, and complexities of texts, our teachers engage and challenge students to go beyond surface understanding and are refined via written composition and peer discussion. Our classes facilitate both individual growth and student collaboration, which allows each student to leave this school with the necessary language skills to succeed in any endeavor they may choose.

Social Studies

Poston Butte's Social Studies Department is committed to providing an inspiring and rigorous curriculum that promotes critical thinking, collaboration, and effective communication. Through an exploration of the past, students will be challenged to analyze patterns that will equip them to be involved community members and creative problem solvers. The academic skills they will learn are specifically designed to prepare them to be self-directed learners for a successful transition to college and a career.

World Language

The Poston Butte High School World Language Department provides all students with opportunities to explore the world and acquire a second language. We provide all students with tools and experiences to become fluent through reading, writing, speaking and listening. Students are provided with learning and experience in the various cultures where the target language is spoken.

Fine Arts

The Fine Arts Department is committed to PBHS student success and artistic excellence. Our goal is to develop artistic literacy. According to the National Coalition for Core Arts Standards (NCCAS), artistic literacy is defined as the ability to understand and contribute to the broad milieu of art-related subjects including Visual Arts (painting, pottery, drawing and so on), Theatre Arts, Musical Arts, and Dance. Artistic literacy can be achieved through a quality arts-based and purpose driven curriculum in a nurturing environment that fosters curiosity, intellect, talent and unique artistic expression.

Science

The Science Department at Poston Butte High School is committed to providing students with the knowledge of where they have come from, everything about the world around them, and how everything interacts as one.  Students are challenged to use reasoning and observations to draw conclusions through hands-on laboratory experiments and activities.  Students are required to develop procedures, analyze data, and carry out proper safety procedures.  Students are given the opportunity to take on challenging everyday topics and draw personal and ethical conclusions about their contributions to the world, and how everything we do changes the world around us.  It is also a place that will challenge thinking, be a place where ideas can be tested out, and a place that allows mistakes to occur.  Because without mistakes and errors most things in science would not exist, so we set out to foster this growth and learning process for growing minds.  The goal is to show the students a different way of thinking, to let them figure out a procedure, carry out that procedure, and come to a conclusion.  This process will allow students to think critically and develop analysis skills.  This in turn will help them in every facet of their life, even if they do not pursue a career in field of science.

Mathematics

At Poston Butte High School, the math department shares a mission to prepare students for life after high school by developing problem-solving skills while simultaneously building conceptual understanding of mathematics.  Teachers provide a variety of learning opportunities through  modeling, student collaboration, discovery, mathematical tools, and differentiated instruction, while incorporating a rigorous online curriculum to build a strong mathematical foundation for any pathway a student may take after graduation. Within a safe and supportive environment, students will develop the critical-thinking skills necessary to use logic, reasoning, and precision to persevere in finding an appropriate solution for any real-world problem.

Physical Education

The Physical Education Department at Poston Butte High School strives to provide a safe, active-learning environment for each student. Our programs are crafted to promote the enjoyment of life-long activities, to improve individual fitness and health, to increase physical activity participation, to advance athletics, and to educate in exercise-related career paths.

Air Force JROTC

Welcome to Poston Butte High School’s Air Force JROTC!  The mission of AFJROTC is to "Develop citizens of character dedicated to serving their nation and community." AFJROTC is not an Air Force accessions program and cadets are never under any obligation to join the military. AFJROTC is a citizenship training program that is designed to educate and train high school cadets in citizenship, promote community service, instill personal responsibility, character, and self-discipline. The program achieves this through classroom education in air and space fundamentals as well as hands-on learning during several fun and challenging activities.

Exceptional Student Services (ESS)

The mission of Poston Butte High School’s Exceptional Student Service Department is to provide high quality education programs where all students are empowered to reach their individual potential through respecting and valuing themselves and others.  We strive to promote  student achievement based on specifically identified needs, and to help prepare each student for their post-secondary career or college goals.
